ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)

ASIST is a two-day workshop designed to provide valuable skills and knowledge to prevent suicide – a program available and suitable for all caregivers both in formal and informal helping roles. Based on an adult education model, ASIST supports participants learning through presentation of information, discussion, videos and practical exercises. ASIST values the experiences and previous learning’s of participants through sharing their stories and contributing to the learning process. ASIST training is an integral part of the LifeLine’s training course for all their counsellors in Australia and New Zealand. ASIST training is delivered to all branches of the US Military, in bases around the world, to prevent suicides among their service men and women.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be better able to:

  • Identify people who have thoughts of suicide
  • Understand how beliefs and attitudes may affect the helping process
  • Hear and understand a person at risk’s story about suicide and what has led to their current situation
  • Help a person at risk recognise a turning point towards safety is occurring
  • Conduct a safety assessment and develop a plan that will help them keep safe for now, with links to others who will help them in that process
