safeTALK is a half-day program truly relevant to everyone in the community regardless of their role, previous experience or training. ‘Safe’ stands for Suicide Alertness For Everyone and TALK refers to the simple yet effective TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe.
safeTALK teaches a simple yet powerful messages about how to recognise a person with thoughts of suicide and offer them support to find further help from a trained caregiver. It explains why we should avoid the common traps of Missing, Dismissing and Avoiding suicide – and instead, reach out and connect with the person by following the TALK steps.
Participants will learn how to:
- Recognise ‘invitations’ from a person with thoughts of suicide, i.e. that they are in need of help
- Connect with them in a helpful, caring way
- Apply the TALK steps to ensure that they are connected to a suicide first-aider who can do an intervention and assess risk
